Bali Thatch Roofing

Bali Thatch, also called Alang Alang Thatching Grass, is grown on the Islands of Bali and Lombok. Our A Grade, Natural String thatching comes in 2.5 m Lengths. The thatching grass is woven around a bamboo batten, meaning it can easily be stapled or nailed onto existing or customised structures.

Bali Thatching has the following qualities:

  • 100 % waterproof with correct spacing and installation
  • Natural insulation offering maximum UV protection
  • Up to 10 degrees cooler than a metal roof in summer
  • No condensation – making it an ideal application for alfresco areas, and spas
  • Long lifespan and durability

Cape Reed, indigenous to South Africa, is a renewable resource where harvesting promotes growth. This African Cape Reed is manufactured into 800 mm x 450 mm flexible tiles which can be clipped, stapled, or nailed onto existing structures for quick, no-fuss installation.

Ideal for all shapes, our African Thatch roofing can add an exotic ambience to any backyard.

African Thatching has the following qualities:

  • 99.5 % waterproof
  • Wind-resistant

How long your Bali thatch lasts depends on the type of thatching and quality of the thatching. At Island Thatch, our Bali Thatching and African Thatching have a long lifespan and durability. They are 99-100% waterproof, and typically last up to 15 years depending on the spacing of your thatching, and roof pitch, under normal conditions.

We also have synthetic thatch roofing, which looks natural, and is highly durable, maintenance free, and does not mould, rot or shed. Our synthetic thatch roofing also has a 15 year to 20 year manufacturer’s warranty (depending on which you pick! ).

Rethatching your Bali Hut requires replacing the thatching on the hut. The total cost depends on the size of the hut and any labour work, but we can provide you with a quote for your specific project.
